Sandhills Writers Conference

About Us

Historic Augusta State Campus For 35 years the Sandhills Writers Conference has brought together authors, agents, editors, educators and songwriters from across the country to share their experience with those learning to write professionally or refining their writing skills. It is a time for reflection, inspiration and recharging in a warm and welcoming setting.

Started in 1975, The Sandhills Writers Conference is hosted each spring in Augusta, Georgia, by Augusta State University. It is considered the Southeast's most prestigious conference for writers of fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and children's literature.

In workshops, private consultations, readings, panels, craft talks, and informal discussions, accomplished writers with diverse perspectives and cultural backgrounds give their time and personal attention to those learning or refining their writing skills. The goal of the conference is to share ideas and information and to instill a new spirit of purpose so participants are able to return to their writing with renewed vigor and inspiration.

The event gets underway this year with the Keynote address by American Book Award Winner Kimiko Hahn on Thursday, March 18, at 11:00 a.m. in Galloway Hall.

Participants get down to business Thursday and Friday with morning and afternoon activities wrapped around special lunches on the lawn behind Galloway Hall.

On-campus activities wind down around 6 p.m. each day allowing participants to explore historical Augusta and have dinner at one of many popular Augusta restaurants. Your time in Georgia's second largest city can be as relaxed or active as you choose.

The conference wraps up Saturday morning with breakfast, more educational sessions and an awards ceremony at 11:30 a.m. First, second, third place, and/or honorable mention awards, judged by the Conference writing staff, will be presented in each category. The Morgan Fitz-George Kuhl Student Writer Award will also be presented. First Place manuscripts will have the opportunity to be published on the conference web site.

Plan to join us March 18-20, 2010, and learn why the Sandhills Writers Conference is not just a Southern thing anymore.
